Happy Boy is a large Fortitude Valley restaurant built for long shared tables. The kitchen cooks Chinese banquets to the table, so groups from eight to 140 eat the way our regulars do.
Everyone eats from the middle of the table, which is why it works as well for a milestone birthday as it does for a full-team Christmas dinner.
The Venue
A main hall with concrete columns and very high ceilings, and a deck outside under the six fairy-lit trees that East Street is known for. Together they seat up to 140.
A spacious room with very high ceilings, dominated by concrete and clean white lines. Loved for a long table dinner for a special occasion. This is the room that has held wedding receptions, milestone birthdays and full-team Christmas dinners.
Under fairy lights on East Street, the continuation of James Street. It is not covered or heated, so we cannot pre-book it against the weather, but note it in your enquiry and we will do our best. On a warm Brisbane night there is nowhere better.
The Food
Our chefs focus on wok cooking and the art of Chinese BBQ, cooked on a high-powered wok burner imported from Hong Kong. Both banquets are built by the chef, not printed on a card.

Happy Boy, Snack Man and Petite sit within a few doors of each other on East Street, run by the same family. Between them we can cover almost any type of event, from a seated ten to a whole-venue reception. Tell us the brief and we will point you at the right room, not just ours.
Southern Chinese · Wok & BBQ
Cantonese wok cooking and Guangdong-style BBQ in a big, bright, high-ceilinged hall, with small-producer Australian wine. The long-table room.
Regional Chinese · Snacks & Wine
Small plates traced to Hong Kong, Beijing, Taiwan, Yunnan and Macau, against one of Brisbane’s deepest wine lists. Darker, moodier, and the one that does stand-up events.
French Bistro · 20 Plates, 20 Wines
A French-inspired bistro on the corner, with Murano chandeliers and a private mezzanine that still feels connected to the room below. The dressed-up option.
We have run wedding receptions at both Snack Man and Happy Boy. If you want a drink before dinner in one room and the meal in another, say so in your enquiry and we will coordinate it between the teams.
The Practical Bits
Gluten free, vegetarian and vegan are part of the standard menu, and we can cater for nearly all requirements with notice. The kitchen does contain allergens, so flag any serious allergy.
Fully licensed and not BYO. We specialise in small-producer Australian wine, with house beers, cocktails and a proper non-alcoholic list.
$200 for bookings of ten or more, which secures the room and comes off your bill as a dollar discount. It is non-refundable.
We do not do dessert, so bring your own cake. Cakeage is $2 per person and we ask you to keep to your sitting time.
Two sittings at night. Groups of four and above get two hours. Need longer? Say so in the enquiry and we will look at what is possible.
Street parking on East, Bridge and Church Streets. Secure garages under the Calile Hotel and at the M&A building, both an easy walk.

Questions
Happy Boy seats up to 140: 100 in the main dining hall and room for about 40 on the outdoor deck. Snack Man takes up to 100 standing or 70 seated. Petite takes up to 120 standing or 90 seated, with a private mezzanine for groups of 8 to 36. Across the three venues that is roughly 300 seated.
Groups of 35 and under can book Happy Boy online. For anything larger, or anything special like a wedding, engagement or partial venue hire, use the enquiry form.
For any group of 10 or more at dinner, yes. At lunch we ask groups of 15 or more to go on a banquet. Under 15 at lunch, you are welcome to send a pre-order through on the day of your booking instead.
It is not a set menu. The chef builds a different banquet for every table based on what you like and what your table needs, which is exactly how we cater for a room with mixed dietaries.
The $55pp Chef’s Banquet is the full evening version: a selection of entrees, mains and fried rice, very generous, available at dinner and at lunch. The $39pp Express Weekday Lunch Banquet is a shorter, lighter weekday lunch format for groups who need to be back at their desk. Children 10 and under are half price on the Chef’s Banquet.
We do not take bookings for the deck. It is not covered or heated and we cannot predict Brisbane weather. Note it in your enquiry and we will do our best to seat you out there, but we cannot guarantee it. If your group is worried about noise or the room being busy, we have more private tables at Snack Man next door.
Yes. We have hosted a range of wedding receptions at both Snack Man and Happy Boy. Between the venues along East Street and the adjoining outdoor areas we can accommodate just about any type of function. Snack Man works well for stand-up canape events up to 100, Petite has a dedicated private dining mezzanine, and Happy Boy is the one people book for a long table dinner. Fill out the form and we will come back within one to two business days.
